My PC hangs whenever I open a large file.

Boot the computer in safe mode and then try to access the file. If this does not resolve the issue try to increase virtual memory. To do this, try the following steps:

  • right click on the My Computer icon and go to Properties.
  • Select the Advanced tab in the System Properties window.
  • Now click on Settings under Performance.

  • Select the Advanced tab and under Virtual Memory click on Change.
  • Select Custom size and change the initial size and maximum size and click OK.

For XP users the recommended initial size is 1024 and the maximum size is 2048.For 98/NT/ME/2000 users the recommended initial size is 384 and the maximum size is 756.

If the problem doesn’t seem to be resolved another option you could try is to Increase your RAM.
