What to do when your router slows down your internet connection speed

When you see that your internet connection speed is very slow, make sure that the problem you are facing is not at your ISP’s end. If you think it’s got to do with your network, here are a few options you can try to troubleshoot.

Option 1: Power-cycle your router and modem.

This is one of the basic steps you need to do. It’s like restarting your computer to fix any issues. Power-cycling will take care of any IP related issues your network may be facing. To do this:

  • Unplug your router power cable and then your modem power cable. Now wait for 45 seconds before you plug your modem back on and then your router. Now restart your computer.
  • Now try to go online and check your connection speed.

Option 2: Check your firewall settings.

See if your computer’s firewall or your anti-virus is causing this problem. Since your router has its own in-built firewall, try disabling your system’s firewall and see if it fixes the problem. Here’s how you do it:

  • Click on Start go to All Programs and click on Accessories.
  • Go to System Tools and then click on Security Center.
  • In the window that opens, click on Windows Firewall.

  • To turn off Windows Firewall, click Off, and then click OK

Remember - Turning off windows firewall is not always recommended.
Since the router may not be equipped to block services, turning off windows firewall, allows windows to advertise services. When the service is advertised any one who does port scanning, will discover these services, which may be result in a security vulnerability.

Now try to go online and check your internet connection speed is faster.

Option 3: Check on the MTU – Maximum Transmission Unit size in the router.

  • Log into your router page from your browser. Click on Setup. Make sure that the MTU option is at Manual.
  • The MTU Size should be 1492. Click on save settings.

Now try to go online and check if your internet connection speed is faster.

Option 4: Working with the Beacon value settings.

  • Log into your router page and click on the Wireless option and select the Advance wireless settings.
  • Change the Beacon values to 80 and click on Save settings.

  • Now check on your internet connection speed. It should be better now.
